Artist Of The Month – Lizzy McAlpine

(March 2024)

Over here on Amplify, I look to highlight artists that have stood out to me each month, for their authenticity or their creative uniqueness – and audiences can look into these artists further. This month, is the talented Lizzy McAlpine. Lizzy McAlpine has been on the music scene for a few years now, defining her place with outstanding lyricism and vocals, but her new era is starting and it is one not to miss.

Lizzy McAlpine started her professional music career in 2018, with her debut ep ‘Indigo’, which is available to stream on Soundcloud. The singer like many, also started posting originals and covers over on Soundcloud before releasing a bulk of music – defining herself as a songwriter.

I discovered her records in 2020, with the release of ‘Give Me A Minute’ in 2020, that included tracks such as ‘Pancakes For Dinner’. What drew me to Lizzy’s work is not only her incredible vocals, but her ability to storytell, which is evidently seen by her fanbase. My favourite example of this is within her project, ‘Five Seconds Flat’, released in 2022.

This album links the idea of emotional death and metaphorical rebirth to the complex emotions we all face in young adulthood, particularly regarding love and heartbreak. The album is a cohesive story of that cycle, using Lizzy’s poetic lyricism. (apart from chemtrails which is a more personal song pertaining grief). The last lyrics on the album, during the song, ‘Orange Show Speedway’, state,”When you’re racing head first towards something that’ll kill you in five seconds flat/When I’m racing head first towards everything that I want back.” Ending this project in that way defines that album as a true cohesive piece of work, expressing that heartbreak is emotionally tough but that quick cycle of falling in love starts beautifully, so she is willing to open her heart again. Alongside, this album, Lizzy McAlpine released a visual project, a short concept film. I personally loved how she used more of her creative vision to express the meanings behind each song, especially as it is a concept album. Encapsulating the raw emotion with beautiful production and each song having a world of its’ own, tied with some narrative to keep the story flowing. One moment throughout that stood out and would be my favourite moment would be when the singer was masked as a skeleton. This was seen towards the end of each song, including ‘Erase Me’. To me, this signals death as a metaphor for heartbreak (which DoomsDay explores), and each continuation of the next song is the restart of that cycle. A creative masterpiece that defined her originality as an artist and creative.

On her originality, comes today as she builds her new era. The ‘Older’ Album. The singer has expressed how she is further tapping into her authentic self in every aspect from music to tour, doing it all in the way she feels is right. Her authenticity is what drew audiences in so this will allow for them to feel more connected to a great body of work. ‘I Guess’ is the latest release for this project, released on March 13th, as well as her releasing the lead single last month, ‘Older’, which are so beautifully written and produced. Both songs explore meanings of different complex emotions as she grows up as a young adult, all tied to genuine self-expression that audiences can relate to on their own terms. This is why she is Amplify’s first, ‘Artist of the Month’.
