A new captivating release from Alex Sophia. Straight away the production stands out to me in the song ‘Aurora’. Elements of house and disco is clear throughout. What starts as a high build of drums, develops into a magical production throughout, keeping to a similar melody. The chiming beats within the music are resonate to that and to the theme of wistfulness throughout the song. As Alex later writes, the band played altogether whilst recording which allows the production to feel like it is a live performance in front of you, as a listener, immersing you in the song.

Alex Sophia wrote, “This song is a spell about seeing the northern lights, wistfulness, and wanting to dance with somebody. Inspired by a new relationship to movement and music. I wrote ‘Aurora’, after starting to take dance classes for the first time in years. Capturing the energy of live performance, I had my band play altogether, at the same time, while recording in the studio. Elements of house and disco, as well as the sonic layers and nuances, reference light and dancing.”

Alex’s portrayal of live moment in regards to dance, is completely evident in this track, with the building production, as well as it originally being performed live – as you would in dance. “Can you sweep me off my feet, I need a release. I want it, do you? Take me up to space, I need an escape, can I find it with you?”, are lyrics that caught my attention to the energy of the song. Perfectly encapsulating her want to dance with someone, after experiencing the connection to dance herself again. With the metaphors of ‘space’ and escaping somewhere higher, it links to the theme of wistfulness and northern lights – a higher, more magical sense of nature, that is freeing alongside live music and movement.

This is paired with her soothing yet unique vocals, that blend seamlessly with the track. Furthermore, adding depth to the song with her vocals reaching higher tones as she sings about space and getting ‘swept off her feet’, which gives that metaphorical sense of feeling free-spirited. Overall, a beautiful track and story that you should definitely check out. Alex Sophia is one to watch for any future releases too.
