With the recent release of her single, ‘It’s Constant’, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Sofia Garcia and talking through the creativity of this newest single and her upcoming work.
‘It’s Constant’, is an indie folk track, written by Sofia Garcia and produced by Harper James X that has a dreamy production and raw emotions evoked in beautiful storytelling, hinting at themes of nostalgia. Starting out in the track, it has a slower production, that is quieter in tone. This builds as the song processes, for the bridge to have a louder hit of guitar in the background and added backing vocals by the ending of the track. Layered vocals and production add a lot of depth to the track, seeing how intricately this song was created. This matches the rise in vocal tone, building louder showcasing her full raw, beautiful vocals. I see that as her gaining confidence in how she feels and keeping her emotions valid, and being able to express that to the fullest extent by the end. Her lyricism has depth and relatability to it, to connect with the audiences’ emotions. “I dig for treasure in your statements”, is a stand-out lyric for me and for Sofia Garcia herself, as you can read later in this article, as I interpret it as she is trying to see if this person likes her back, but has to really dig deep to find a glimpse of it as they may have not been clear back. Evoking difficult emotions in trying to navigate how she feels and is scared to express back to that person, but also reading between the lines of what that person says on a day-to-day to get that back without having to necessarily ask. “Perfect for fans of artists like Maggie Rogers, Phoebe Bridgers, and Taylor Swift, this single promises to pull at your heartstrings while leaving you eager for more from Patches.” You can read more about this track and her musical journey below:
Sofia is an “indie folk music artist based in New York City”, and has always been surrounded by music on her musical journey to now, whether it be through “family get-togethers or church”. She moved to New York City for high school where “I learned that I loved songwriting”, as it specialised in the arts. Specifically in the last few years, Sofia explains that she was “taking the time out to record music and defining what the sound is that I wanted to put out in the world.” Leading up to where we are now, on her 4th single leading up to her first ever EP project. It is clear to me that song writing came first for her, as she portrays that so beautifully in her work, with beautiful and deep lyricism. Sofia Garcia has been stuck with ‘imposter syndrome’ with her music that most people relate to, but is in a place now where “this is what I’m great at and that fills me as a person, and seeing the impact of music that I write on other people is a high that I want to ride for the rest of my life.” Making this upcoming music all the more exciting, seeing that an artist is growing alongside her work so clearly.
For ‘It’s Constant’, there are so many elements of the track that tie together wonderfully, from the production, to the lyricism to the tone and vocals, and I can see that creativity. Sofia speaks on that creative process. “The thing that most stands out for me was the emotional vulnerability and attachment I feel.” This was heightened through the recording process, which “took 2 years to get the song right just because the feeling is so visceral and grandiose.” Compared to the other tracks previously, it is “sonically and emotionally” with a greater attachment, as this track took a lot longer in the process than other songs. This also came from the meaning to her as she “wrote it after catching feelings for a friend”. Sofia Garcia explains that she,”sat on it for 7 months cynical thinking but when it came down to it, it was the most necessary thing that had to happen and added a layer of vulnerability to my friends.” An encompassing feeling paired with authentic lyricism that listeners can relate and feel connected to in their own way.

Within that process, her artistry starts with the lyrics on approach as they “come first quite reactionary as situations happen”, writing quickly and the music following shortly after, but also writes in excess, taking inspiration similarly to Taylor Swift’s All Too Well 10 Minute version, with the extra verses. “It’s a matter of chopping it down from there and figuring out the core of it.” A s writing was such a core part of this song and her work as a creative, a standout lyric for Sofia is,”I dig for treasure in your statements, I walk the finest wires between romance and patience is a lyric that hits a little too close to home”, meaning she is “wanting more from a person and being okay to say that out loud.”
For this upcoming debut EP called,’Patches’, Sofia Garcia explains the songs set to release for it are a lot fresher and about,”manifesting my future and current self, letting go of bad woes in love and living, and just embracing myself where I’m at.” An upcoming release that everyone can be excited for, as it brings more of her artistry to the music scene! As she grows, we speak on any dream artists she would like to collaborate with…”Imogen Heap is a great inspiration for me, just sonically and lyrically. She just writes in such an immense way that I find deeply inspiring. So that’s bucket list.” I see glimpses of Imogen’s style within her work as she continues to grow.
Although Sofia Garcia is early on into her career, she has already accomplished so much and had a few stand-out core memories so far. One being the last show she did. “The audience singing back on this single to be released is a core memory…It’s incredible because I haven’t released these songs, and there is no greater feeling in the world, than someone echoing what your heart felt in the day-to-day.” That also reassures that artist that their music is well-received and connected with people prior to its’ release.
With shows come the audience she is surrounded by, and her fanbase that stays highly engaged and supportive of her work. Fan engagement is important to any artist as they bring so much, and Sofia’s favourite way to connect with her audience is through “instagram stories and just sharing my day, posting polls as well as the broadcast channel on Instagram which is a direct line of communication”, which can play a part in the upcoming releases of her work, and sharing that with the fans. However, if you have just discovered her work, she describes her music, especially the new track, as it’s “typically for people that like to just sing in their room full volume”, and are connected to their emotions heavily, and want to get that heard. “My main audience is people who are really in their feels, that love indie folk music and that have tender hearts.” Definitely an artist to look out for.
As for any upcoming plans her audience can look forward to, she has her upcoming EP as mentioned called,’Patches’. As well as this, Sofia Garcia can announce her upcoming release of her 1st Spanish song, “to survive february” (english translation), set to release February 28th. This is her first single from the EP. Whilst we wait for these exciting projects, you can listen to her newest release, ‘It’s Constant’ below:
