Women’s History Month: celebrating women in the music industry

In recent years, we’ve seen women truly dominate the industry and more smaller artists finding that inspiration through this to put out their voice. And we cannot forget those that paved the way from Amy Winehouse to Joni Mitchell to Ella Fitzgerald . It is amazing to see these artists now frame the future, and always acknowledge those that came before them for inspiration and to allow them to succeed further. With it being Women’s History Month, we are celebrating our current favourite female musicians, from smaller, new artists to those really breaking through this month.

Doechii:

You may have heard her from her outstanding performance at the Grammys, or maybe one of her hit tracks, ‘Denial is a River’, released in August 2024 from her mixtape,’Alligator Bites Never Heal’. She mixes rap/hiphop with her lyrical artistry, diving into an immersive world with each track. Despite a high production, it almost has this raw quality in her words, with ‘Denial is a River’, almost describing her life and manifesting her future (her now!). I think there was almost a gap on the scene for her original quality in each track – being so different. Her performance at the Grammys was also highly talked about, with an incredible stage presence that drew more audiences in. She also had her recent release, ‘Anxiety’, which was a re-record, after it took off on TikTok. This track was originally self-released on Youtube in 2019, but has recently gained traction, which led to the re-release. This shows the power of Tiktok in music nowadays, and how this artist has worked for a long time to reach where she is now, but always stayed true to her work. With the likes of SZA and Doja Cat praising her for some time before, it is clear she is only growing further and is confident in who she is in her work.

Dora Jar:

After just finishing her opening slot, supporting Gracie Abrams on her EU tour, she is on the rise as an artist. Her music takes bedroom pop to a more original state, providing a catchy production that you have to re-listen to. ‘Ragdoll’, is one of those that does exactly that, with the mixture of a fast-paced verse that has a climax, but yet the production is more valued in the slowed down elements – with her vocals being the focus of those fast-paced breaks. She knows where to focus in her music, which is an element so important to her work and why listeners find it so catchy. She also has a fun stage presence, immersing herself within her world of music, which captivates those audiences she may have seen whilst on an opener tour run – an almost mystical world, referencing ‘fairies’ and ‘elves’ often. When Gracie postponed a couple of her Europe shows due to illness on this leg of tour, Dora and her team ended up putting on their own shows in those cities to give those audiences some sort of concert experience still, with only costing about £5 to cover venue costs. She sung some of her own tracks, and some of Gracie’s, creating an amazing environment, and allowing more people to discover her own music. This shows a lot about her character, and how passionate she is about performing, and giving audiences those special experiences. This also helped more people discover her music than they might have before. She has an upcoming headline tour in Europe that you don’t want to miss!

Sabrina Carpenter:

Now it is truly no surprise that she has made it on this list, as she has really broke through in recent years and this month she has been on tour within Europe. However, what is so inspiring about Sabrina to many, is her years of dedication to her craft before being known to the world as she is now. Her whole branding is massive, especially with the release of ‘Short and Sweet’ album, and the aesthetic that came with such. With such a strong album, full of high production, it is no wonder everyone loves her work. Each track on the album blend cohesively, but also can stand alone – which is always the perfect blend for an album. Her tour adds to this world her music leads into, whilst also staying authentic in her lyricism and style. She has a strong stage production, with fun ‘spin the bottle’ elements to cover songs, and sticking to a theme of a sleepover that you would have with friends in the duration of her performance – which works well with her music and style. She has these dancers that always add a level to any tour with the choreography, and it becomes a fun world for a pop star. She of course, always has those more acoustic songs mixed in, such as ‘Lie To Girls’, that have more of a focus on the lyricism. Definitely an artist to point out this month.

Jensen McRae:

A newer artist that I have been loving currently, and that I am celebrating on here for Women’s History Month. Her raw, deep and beautiful lyricism is what stands out about her work, seen in songs such as ‘Massachusetts’ and ‘Praying on Your Downfall’. She almost takes you through a storyline in her work of her experience, and it feeling lyrically descriptive but also leaves the audience to relate to it in their own way. This mixed with her uniquely beautiful tone of voice, with incredible vocals blends seamlessly. Audiences can feel related to her for these reasons and connect to her music about the trials and tribulations of love and loss, as it stands alone so well. She is on set to release a new album, ‘I Don’t Know How But They Found Me’, on the 25th of April, and has a new single called, ‘Savannah’, out this Thursday, March 20th. There is a lot to look forward to from this artist with this upcoming project, and also an upcoming tour that is selling fast. Definitely on the rise as an artist and why she is one of Amplify’s current favourites.

Rachel Chinouriri:

Rachel is a pop star that is definitely making waves, currently opening for Sabrina’s Europe tour. Her incredible album,’What A Devastating Turn Of Events’, really signaled her talents, combining excellent production, with honest lyricism and remaining cohesive in her work. Her vocals are also at the top of her game, and is clear when performing live herself. People may have remembered her earlier single,’So My Darling (Acoustic), showing that she has been creating this world for a number of years, and is definitely recieving her flowers now. Her live performance is also full of joy, showing her passion and love for being on the stage and making it her own – which can be sometimes tricky to navigate as an opener. Audiences have definitely felt captivated from her performance, keeping that energy alive. In the recent BRITs, she was nominated for both,’Artist of the Year’, and ‘Best New Arrtist’ – a big acclaid especially from her previous time going to the BRIT School as a student. Even Adele loves her work, having sent her flowers and congratulating her for this. She recently released a song called,’Can We Talk About Isaac?’, which is a fun, love anthem and has an upcoming EP called ‘Little House’ that fans can look forward to on the 3rd of April. She is unstoppable and cannot wait to see what she achieves next.

Eve Christina:

For the last artist, highlighting someone on the rise fits well for our blog, and that is Eve Christina. Having already opened for the incredible Alessi Rose, it is clear she is going to rise quickly as an artist. Her honest, beautiful lyricism is what attracts fans to her work – often sitting acoustically on TikTok to sing demos of such. Then the track comes out and it is a perfect blend of that lyricism, sitting more acoustically with a guitar, so that description is standing out. Not to mention, her calming vocals complimenting this energy well. She does the same on stage, only needing a guitar to captivate audiences as they listen to every single lyric and word, to encapsulate themselves in her work. The more fast-paced tone in songs like,’tangled’, is a unique element I enjoy about her work. She is about to support Nell Mescal on her small tour, and is definitely an artist you need to check out if you haven’t already.

Although there is so many more female artists I can put in this post for Women’s History Month, here are some current favourite female artists, newer and more popular. Be sure to check them out below, and celebrate the wonderful women making music currently.
